  2. TIME: Late Cretaceous
  3. LOCALITY: Asia (Mongolia and China)
  4. SIZE: 6 ft/1.8 m long

  6. A dramatic find in Mongolia during 1971
  7. revealed two fossilized skeletons
  8. Velociraptor locked in combat with
  9. the horned dinosaur Protoceratops. A great
  10. struggle had obviously taken place, since
  11. Velociraptor had died grasping the head
  12. shield of Protoceratops with its hands, while
  13. ripping into the belly with its sickle-clawed
  14. feet. Protoceratops had managed to cave in
  15. the chest of Velociraptor,  possibly with its
  16. horny beak, before it, too, died. No scene
  17. could be more indicative of the ferocious
  18. lifestyle of the dromaeosaurs in general, and
  19. Velociraptor in particular.The long, low,
  20. flat-snouted head of Velociraptor is the main
  21. feature that distinguishes it from other
  22. dromaeosaurs, which typically had short, deep
  23. heads. In other respects, it was similar to
  24. them, although its sickle claws were
  25. relatively small.
